A long term review of the AquaTru Connect

Introduction

Welcome to RealSense! In this detailed review, we're exploring the AquaTru Connect, a highly efficient and smart tabletop reverse osmosis (RO) water filtration system. If you're tired of the hassle of buying bottled water or dealing with the unpleasant taste of well water, this system could be the solution you've been searching for. We'll cover everything from setup to performance, key features, and my personal experiences using it.

Setup and Initial Impressions

Setting up the AquaTru Connect is straightforward. The initial setup involves running the filtration system three times to clear out the filters, ensuring that your water is as pure as possible from the first glass onward. The system features two water tanks: the larger back tank for tap water and the front tank for filtered water. This design is both intuitive and user-friendly.

The fill tank has a built-in handle underneath the lid, which is unique and functional. Since it is the larger tank, it can be heavy when filled, and the handle makes it easier to manage. The tanks are designed to be easily removed and replaced, with clips and magnets securing the cover without the need for screws. This makes maintenance straightforward and hassle-free.

Filtration Efficiency

RO systems typically waste some water, but the AquaTru Connect is relatively efficient. For every 1 gallon of tap water, three-quarters of a gallon of purified water is produced, meaning only 25% is waste. The tanks are designed with this in mind, so the purified water tank is 25% smaller than the fill tank. This thoughtful design makes the water level lines appear aligned, taking the waste into account.

Water Quality

The true test of any water filtration system is the quality of the water it produces, and the AquaTru Connect excels in this area. The water tastes great, and based on various water testing results, it is one of the best systems available. Although I didn't run my own water quality tests, numerous reviews confirm the system's effectiveness. The AquaTru Connect removes a wide range of contaminants, including heavy metals, chemicals, and microorganisms, resulting in exceptionally clean water.

Smart Features with the AquaTru Connect App

Since I'm a bit of a tech nerd, I opted for the AquaTru Connect version, which has WiFi and allows you to connect to the app. For those who want something simpler, there is the AquaTru Classic, which doesn't have WiFi but is otherwise identical.

The app is straightforward, showing how many gallons have been filtered and the life percentage of each filter. For instance, I noticed that I needed to replace the pre-carbon filter as it was already at 19%. If you want more data, the gallons can be broken down by day, week, month, and year, which is neat.

Additionally, there is a savings tab where you can calculate the difference from buying bottled water, and it automatically calculates how much you have saved. In my case, I've saved $223 in about six months. At this pace, the AquaTru Connect will pay for itself in about a year, which is not a bad ROI. You can also buy filter replacements directly from the app, saving time from having to log into a website or Amazon to place the order. The app has additional features such as notifications and reminders that can send alerts to your phone, letting you know when filtration is complete or when a filter needs to be replaced, which is great since the notifications are automatic.

Replacing Filters

Since I had to replace my pre-carbon filter, let me show you how easy it is. The replacement filter comes in a vacuum-sealed bag and is straightforward to install. You simply unscrew the old pre-carbon filter, noting that it might be a bit tight since the system is pressurized, and screw in the new one. Once the new filter is installed, I go to the app, tap on the filter, and hit reset to set the filter life to 100%. There is a quick prompt that says it takes up to three hours for the change to take effect, and that’s it.

Pros and Cons

Pros:

Effective Filtration: The AquaTru Connect uses a robust reverse osmosis process to remove a wide range of contaminants, including heavy metals, chemicals, and microorganisms. The result is exceptionally clean water.

Ease of Use: The system is user-friendly, with intuitive controls and a clear display. Changing filters is straightforward, and the maintenance requirements are minimal, making it a convenient option for everyday use.

Sleek Design: The AquaTru Connect boasts a modern and compact design, allowing it to fit comfortably on most countertops without taking up excessive space. Its aesthetic is both stylish and functional.

Smart Features: The AquaTru Connect app allows you to monitor filter life, track water consumption, and order replacements directly from your phone. The app's notifications and reminders add a layer of convenience.

Cost Savings: By reducing the need to buy bottled water, the AquaTru Connect offers significant savings over time. In my case, I've saved $223 in about six months.

Cons:

No Temperature Control: The AquaTru Connect does not cool or heat the water, so it is always at room temperature. However, you can refrigerate the detachable water tank for chilled water.

Screen Utility: The screen on the unit provides minimal information, only showing a countdown of the filtration stages and a WiFi indicator. It would be more useful if it displayed data such as gallons filtered and filter life percentages, similar to the app.

Leakage Issue: One annoying problem with my unit is a small leak in the water dispenser button. When fully pressed, a water drop appears towards the front of the button, which is not part of the actual stream. This is annoying since it happens frequently and sometimes ends up leaving drops on your hand. The leak only occurs when the button is fully pressed and does not persist after releasing it. Although the problem has not worsened with use, I believe it is a notable quality issue from the manufacturer.

App Reliability: The app isn't 100% reliable. I've only had issues connecting twice since I received it, but sometimes it logs me out, and I have to log in again.

VOC Carbon Filter with PH Plus Mineral Boost: This optional filter is more expensive and, in my experience, gave the water a burnt charcoal aftertaste that was unpleasant. If you're looking for minerals, you can always add some lemon or mineral drops to your water. I don't recommend the mineral boost filter.

Practical Benefits

Beyond the day-to-day convenience, having a reliable source of clean water is crucial during emergencies. Living in South Florida, I know that hurricanes can disrupt water supplies, and stores can quickly run out of bottled water. The AquaTru Connect ensures that I always have access to clean water, even during such emergencies.

Final Thoughts

In my experience, I highly recommend the AquaTru Connect for anyone looking to improve their home water quality. Despite the initial cost, the system pays for itself over time through savings on bottled water. The AquaTru Connect not only provides great-tasting water but also contributes to reducing the amount of microplastics consumed. Additionally, having a reliable source of clean water during emergencies is a significant advantage.
